Empowering Diversity: Celebrating International Day of Persons With Disabilities

Step into the empowering realm of inclusivity as we delve into the heart of the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

This annual celebration is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a global movement resonating with the principles of awareness, understanding, and acceptance for individuals with disabilities.

Since its inception in 1992, December 3rd has become a poignant reminder of our collective responsibility to dismantle barriers—physical, technological, and attitudinal—that hinder the journey towards a truly inclusive society.

IDPwD is not a solitary endeavor but a harmonious collaboration. Government entities, schools, organisations, community groups, businesses, and individuals join forces, creating a tapestry of inclusivity for the 1.3 billion people living with disabilities.

It’s not merely a celebration; it’s a commitment to weaving a societal fabric where every thread, regardless of ability, is acknowledged, valued, and celebrated.

Now, let’s shine a spotlight on the main act—the theme for IDPwD 2023…

It’s not just a catchy phrase; it’s a call to arms.

‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.’

It encapsulates the essence of collaboration, emphasising the need to work collectively to make our world better and fairer for people with disabilities.

These 17 ambitious goals are a roadmap for countries worldwide, aiming to create a world that’s better and fairer for everyone by 2030.

It’s not just about achieving these goals; it’s about ensuring that people with disabilities are not passive spectators but active contributors, shaping the journey towards a more inclusive future.

So, where does DEWEY fit into this empowering narrative?

Well, we’re not just observing; we’re participating actively in the movement. DEWEY proudly stands as more than just a fashion brand. We emerge as a beacon of inclusivity, actively participating in the movement towards a more equitable and diverse world.

Our commitment goes beyond fashion; it’s about creating a workplace that reflects the diversity and abilities of our community.

This brings us to an exciting chapter in our journey—our plans to actively employ disabled individuals.

We believe in the power of representation, not just on the runway but in every facet of our brand. By providing meaningful employment opportunities, we’re not just talking the talk; we’re walking the walk towards a more inclusive future.

Our vision is expansive, reaching beyond the confines of the fashion industry. We aspire to dismantle societal norms that limit the potential of individuals with disabilities. DEWEY stands at the forefront, challenging the status quo and advocating for a world where everyone, irrespective of ability, has the opportunity to not only have a seat at the table but to actively shape its contours.

DEWEY is not merely a brand; it's a movement. It's a resounding statement that inclusivity is not a mere choice; it is a fundamental pillar of a progressive society.

As we celebrate IDPwD 2023, let’s raise a toast to progress, empowerment, and the undeniable truth that a more inclusive world is not just a possibility; it’s a shared responsibility.

DEWEY is more than just a fashion brand; it’s a testament to the power of inclusivity. We’re shaping a future where every individual, regardless of ability, not only has a seat at the table but plays a pivotal role in defining what that table looks like.

A message from our founder, Chamiah: ‘as I celebrate my 25th birthday (what a coincidence that I’d be born on IDPWD?!😅), we come together to raise awareness for people with disabilities. This year’s theme is one close to my heart. DEWEY as a brand is commuted to sustainability, contributing to the longevity of our planet. I pledge to never make a decision that I feel with harm the planet, or anyone within it. Happy IDPWD, Chamiah x’
